The
dictionary defines chlorine as a "gaseous greenish-yellow
element used as a bleaching and disinfecting agent." As
a disinfectant it kills bacteria. As a bleaching agent it makes
contaminants colourless. In your shower water it is just another
vaporised chemical that may increase your risk of illness and
make you feel like you are showering in swimming pool water.

skin, the body's largest organ, can easily absorb contaminants

Chlorine
is universally used to chemically disinfect water. It kills germs,
bacteria and other microorganisms. Chlorine readily passes through
cell walls, and attaches to fatty acids in the cell, disrupting

Benefits of KDF Filtration:
Different from carbon’s limited adsorption capability, KDF creates an electrochemical environment. This galvanic action allows for the reversal of the original chlorine creation process. This electrochemical reversal converts Free Available Chlorine to a harmless and soluble calcium chloride. For those not familiar , KDF™ media is a brass alloy (copper and zinc). These dissimilar metals allow for the creation of the galvanic action. This principle allows for long term usage impeded only by sediment or particulate matter that might occlude the surface, thereby reducing the media’s ability to generate electricity.
Activated carbon filters contain particles of carbon that have been treated to increase their surface area and increase their ability to adsorb a wide range of contaminants. Coconut shell carbon and bituminous (coal) carbon are the most common sources of carbon in activated carbon filters. The raw carbon source is slowly heated in the absence of air to produce a high carbon material. Passing oxidizing gases through the material at extremely high temperatures activates the carbon. As the water passes over the positively charged carbon surface, the negative ions of the contaminants are drawn to the surface of the carbon granules. This is known as ADSORPTION [to adhere] and can be closely compared in principle to magnetism.
As a general rule the adsorption ability of Activated Carbon depends largely on a number of factors. They are as follows:
TURBIDITY: How clean is the water from fine particulate matter. The cleaner the incoming water, the greater is the ability to adsorb.
FLOW RATE: Gushing water is not filtered as well as water flowing at slower speeds. Example, if you were to throw a nail past the head of a magnet the odds of it adhering would be slight. Carbon is primarily used in drinking water filters which have a lower flow rate of ½ to 1 GPM (Gallons per minute) Water entering a shower filter is usually at a higher flow rate of approximately 2.5 GPM.( 5 time faster than through a water filter), far too fast for proper adsorption. Even using cold water, a minimum of 5 times the amount of carbon would be necessary to filter the shower water.
CONTACT TIME: Water must be in contact with the activated carbon for a sufficient period of time to allow the activated carbon to effectively adsorb the contaminants. With a cartridge size of approximately 2.5 to 3 inches, shower filters containing carbon do not contain sufficient media to adsorb at the above mentioned 2.5 GPM flow rate. Most drinking filters produce .5-1 GPM but
shower usage ranges from 2 - 2.5 GPM. (2 - 5 times greater).
TEMPERATURE: Carbon is a cold water media. It is most effective at temperature ranges of 50° - 80°(F). At higher temperatures, carbon becomes ineffective. Tap water, where carbon works best, has temperatures ranges from 60°- 75° (F). Showering temperatures typically range from 85° - 105° (F). Hot water should NEVER be run through a carbon filter, because hot water will tend to release, or “off-load”, trapped contaminants into the water flow potentially making the water leaving the filter more contaminated than the
water going in.
Bacterial Concerns with Carbon Shower filters The major problem associated with carbon in any form is bacterial contamination. Wet activated carbon, richly infused with trapped organic matter, provides an ideal breeding ground for bacteria. High bacterial levels occur when the carbon is fully saturated and then let to stand [e.g., overnight]. As the water temperature inside the carbon cartridge rises, as with warm shower water, bacteria breeding escalates. Activated Carbon cannot hold onto bacteria, so when water flow is reintroduced a contaminated sample can be output. Bacteria gets into the activated carbon filter in the first place because disinfection at the water treatment plant does not guarantee the destruction of all bacteria.

Kinetic Degradation Fluxion (KDF-55) Water Filters - top
Kinetic Degradation Fluxion (KDF) is a high-purity copper-zinc formulation that uses a basic chemical process known as redox (oxidation / reduction) to remove chlorine, lead, mercury, iron, and hydrogen sulphide from water supplies. The process also has a mild anti-bacterial, algaecitic and fungicitic effect, and may reduce the accumulation of lime scale.
KDF process media is used in pre-treatment and primary treatment applications to supplement or replace existing technologies in order to extend system life and to reduce heavy metal contamination, chlorine and hydrogen sulphide. It is often combined with other technologies to achieve superior overall results. Because of its effectiveness at higher water temperatures, it is often used on shower water filtration systems to remove chlorine and other contaminants.
The technology was developed by KDF Fluid Treatment, Inc. in the mid 1980s and was patented in 1987. KDF filter media meets EPA and Food and Drug Administration standards for levels of zinc and copper in potable water, and is certified by NSF International to its Standard 61 for drinking water.
KDF process media will reduce or remove chlorine, iron, hydrogen sulphide, lead, mercury, magnesium, and chromium, and may inhibit the growth of bacteria, algae, and fungi. Redox media remove up to 99% of water-soluble cations (positively-charged ions) of lead, mercury, copper, nickel, chromium and other dissolved metals.
While removal rates depend on a number of factors, more than 99% of chlorine is removed by KDF in home water treatment systems (90% in shower water filters due to high flow rate).
Fluoride(Fluoride is not a major concern when showering due to extremely low level e.g. 10ppm. However it is a major concern when drinking fluoridated water - accordingly we thoroughly recommend a quality water distiller for pure drinking water.)
Chlorgon was invented and patented by David Farley of Sprite Industries.
Chlorgon converts free-chlorine and some combined chlorines into harmless chloride.
This is done using a chemical reaction known as "Reduction-Oxidation", often called Redox. Redox reactions transfer electrons between molecules of the filtration media and molecules found in the water.
A molecule of free chlorine is transformed to a larger chloride, which is water soluble and unable to be absorbed through the skin.
The Chlorgon Redox reaction occurs at a wide range of water temperatures, so it's an excellent complement to KDF-55, which works best at warmer temperatures.
Sprite shower filters use both KDF-55 and Chlorgon filtration. This combination provides the most complete removal of combined chlorine and free chlorine at the widest range of shower temperatures.

Chlorine: Added to most municipal water supplies, this
disinfectant hardens arteries, destroys proteins in the body, irritates
skin and sinus conditions, and aggravates asthma, allergies, and respiratory

Chloroform: This powerful by-product of chlorination causes
