Reverse
Osmosis works by moving water through a membrane which acts as a filter. The
Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary says that osmosis is the "movement
of a solvent through a semi-permeable membrane (as of a living cell) into
a solution of higher solute concentration that tends to equalise the concentrations
of solute on the two sides of the membrane."
Water Distillation takes the water out of the "filth - contaminants
- diseases and viruses"
Reverse Osmosis takes the "filth and contaminants" out
of the water.
Advantages
of Reverse Osmosis:
Removes chlorine, taste and odour, and chemicals (with carbon pre-filter
or post-filter)
Removes
heavy metals, such as lead
Can
remove cysts - but not recommended
Disadvantages
of Reverse Osmosis:
Can
not remove radioactive contaminated water
Not
effective at removing biological components such as: Algae, Bacteria,
Crypto Sporidium, Viruses (Giardia etc.)
Wastes
water - usually 4 to 5 gallons of water go down the drain to treat 1 gallon
Produces
brine water waste

Some compounds can make the membrane deteriorate or clog - e.g. chlorine

Therefore it can be important to pre-treat the water by suspending and
removing solid material, anti-scaling treatments, adjusting the pH, de-chlorinating
and softening
If
the membrane is not changed regularly, a "dam" of filth
forms in the membrane, which subsequent water must pass through
This "dam" can become a breeding ground for Bacteria

The above
photos show the scale / mineral / chemical residue removed from the base
of the boiling chamber of one of our Water Distillers, after
just 6 weeks water distillation for a family of three. (All of our pure water distillers will produce the same results.)
This particular residue is from one of the purest sources of council supplied,
non fluoridated drinking water in the South Island of New Zealand. Different
locales produce various amounts, types and colours of scale residue, depending upon what minerals / pollutants are in the water, e.g. sewerage & industrial waste; as well as what poisons and chemicals e.g. fluoride, chlorine etc, that your local government adds to your the supply.
Because of water distillation, the owner's kidneys, arteries etc are now free of such scale / mineral / chemical residue.
Water suppliers find it "uneconomical" to supply the public with pure water, as up to 98% of the water supply will be used by the population to: flush toilets - mop floors - wash vehicles & clothes - industry etc. Although some councils and water suppliers claim that their water is suitable and safe for human consumption, they emphatically refuse to accept liability by supplying an Affidavit or Statutory Declaration to that effect, for fear of perjuring / implicating themselves!
